19-та конференція ICOM вже завтра

International Conference on Orienteering Mapping (ICOM),

    Hallo Yevhen Mazur

My name is Keld Krogsgaard from Denmark
I am running orientering in Silkeborg OK

I am writing to you because I saw somewhere on the internet a artickel about gps siganl and that you have a Xiomi mi 9 and use it in your mapping work for making orienterings map.

One of the good mapping people in Denmark has testet a Xiaomi mi 8 and found it very good as a accurate GPS to use when mapping in the forrest.

I have bought a used MI 9 and trying at the moment to test it in the forest also as a orientering mapper.
I have been walking on the same path 3 times witch is aprox. 1500 meter long. sometimes the GPS is spot on, but some times it goes on the left side of the path and some times it goes on the right side of the path (the same path, but different days)

Therefor I have some questions to ask you :
Is the compass good in the MI 9 ?
Can I move the compass ?
How do you use the MI 9 ? (If you still have it)
    (Set up ect.)

Do you think that a MI 8 is better than a MI 9 for mapping in the forrest ?
Because of better atenna in MI 8 ?

Hope you have the time to answer my question, so I an decide if I should use a MI 8 or a MI 9 for mapping.

    Best regards
    Keld Krogsgaard

    1. Hi Keld!

Thank you for your interest. Regarding your questions:

The compass in my MI 9 show strange things so I don’t use it. Instead, I use a forearm-mounted analog compass. My previous phone was Xperia Z5. The compass in Z5 was much more better.

I don’t know a way how to move the compass… I can advise you to describe an user-case why do you want to move the compass and ask this question on Github – https://github.com/OpenOrienteering/mapper . Feel free to create feature requests there.

Basically I didn’t make any specific setups. One thing that might be worth mentioning – App battery saver (Settings -> Battery & performance -> App battery saver -> OpenOrienteering Mapper -> No restrictions).

One more observation – MI 9 is equipped with a capacitive sensor of not the best quality. Previously, I used a noname Chinese stylus with a steel core. But now moved to a more expensive Adonit Jot Dash 3. This upgrade makes an interaction with the sensor more natural, accurate and enjoyable.

Hope my answers will be useful.
